Costa Rica Summer Study Abroad Program 2011
Current Faculty
All language classes will be taught by faculty members at Forester
Instituto Internacional. The Culture and Civilization of Costa Rica
class will be team-taught by several members of the College of DuPage
faculty and other visiting scholars, as well as by the directors
of the program, who are also available to counsel, supervise and
assist students.

Elizabeth Mares
Professor of Spanish
College of DuPage
An associate professor of Spanish at College of DuPage, Mares holds
a B.A. in French, a B.A. in Spanish with Honors, and an M.A. in Spanish
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mares served as
co-director of the Costa Rica program from 2005 to 2009. She has also
studied abroad in Paris and Guadalajara, Mexico. Mares is currently
the co-chair for the Latin American Studies Committee and the advisor
for the award-winning Spanish Club, Casa de Amigos. In addition to
her academic interests, she enjoys international cinema and playing
tennis. She looks forward to experiencing the rich culture of Costa
Rica with her students this summer.
John Paris
Assistant Professor of History
College of DuPage
John Paris is an Assistant Professor of History at College of DuPage
and has taught here since 1996. He is originally from Elmhurst, IL,
and has a B.A. and M.A. in History from Northern Illinois University
in DeKalb. He has a strong background in Latin American Studies, having
taught Latin American history at College of DuPage and elsewhere for
many years. He has been the co-chairman of the Latin American Studies
Committee since 2009, was a participant in two Costa Rica Study Abroad
Experiences (2009 and 2011), and is a proficient Spanish speaker. Professor
Paris has also taught and developed curriculum in United States history,
African-American history and Western Civilization in a variety of formats,
including online. In addition to his academic interests, Professor
Paris enjoys travelling, camping, reading historical fiction and non-fiction,
and spending time with family.
